Long Vowel Blends & Sight Words
Master Silent E rule (make/made) and Two Vowel rule (boat/rain), build confidence decoding longer words with vowel patterns. Expand vocabulary with Kindergarten high-frequency words and build automatic word recognition.
Story Elements
Identify characters, setting, and plot, distinguish fiction from nonfiction, recognize authors and illustrators, and analyze texts critically.
Advanced Communication
Stay on topic in conversations, describe drawings in detail, answer text-based questions, and use sensory and feeling words expressively.
Course Preview
A Holistic Approach To English Language Art
- State Standard driven. This curriculum follows CA State Standards and all phonics and speaking and listening skills are derived from Kindergarten readiness assessments.
- Lessons are made using research based techniques and strategies.
- Students will become fluent in the first four sets of Dolch Sight words to support future reading fluency and build a receptive and expressive vocabulary.
- Each session focuses on a particular skill or state standard and will be adjusted based on the student’s level of knowledge or needs.
- Each lesson includes a dialogue skill that focuses on a pre-kindergarten or kindergarten speaking and listening goal such as, self awareness, imagination, problem solving, engagement, etc.
- By attending the total of 15 sessions in each of the four levels, the students will gain a base knowledge that they can use to enter kindergarten and thrive as a productive classmate and student.
Class Main Focus:
- This class is designed for students who are confident in their knowledge of short vowels, are able to sound out CVC words, and know all pre-k sight words.
- The focus of this class is long vowel blends with emphasis on the Silent E and Two Vowel Rules and Kindergarten Sight Words.
- Recommended for ages 4-5
Prior Knowledge:
- Know all five vowels and their sounds
- Build CVC words
- Match pictures to words
- Know most Pre-K sight words
Speaking/Listening Skills:
- Respond to questions or conversations with teacher and peers with on subject responses
- Answer simple questions about a text
- Describe a drawing in response to text
- Use sight words in sentences
Reading Skills:
- Identify story elements
- Tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction
- Identify the author and illustrator
- Recognize feeling and sensory words in a text
- Ask and answer questions about a text
